Positive self-talk matters.
How we speak to ourselves plays a huge role in how we feel and think. It often determines the choices we make, either helping us to battle our fears and reach for the stars, or holding us back, thinking it is better not to try. The truth is, we all fall down sometimes. What's important is to pick yourself back up, and try yet again. If our self-talk isn't positive, it often tells us we are not enough, not worthy, not smart enough, not ____ enough, so there's no point in trying. These statements are not healthy or helpful.
Everyone has an inner voice, that encourages or criticizes us. It usually is the voice of our primary caregivers in our family of origin. Depression and other issues, though, can turn that voice negative and unhelpful, as well. Regardless of where negative self-talk comes from, it's important to challenge it, and replace it with more helpful thoughts.
When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, stop yourself, and take a step back. Examine the statement you are making, and what evidence there is for it. Is it helpful to your growth, healing, and health? If the answer is no, try to reflect on a new way of looking at the situation. Pick or create your own positive affirmations, and try to repeat them to yourself, slowly and with thought, several times a day or more.
These are just a few affirmations and inspirational quotes. Find ones that speak to you, and make them your own.
